Offshore maintenance is priced in logistics, not in material. A gallon of coating costs what it costs onshore; getting it, a crew, and a hot work permit onto a platform costs an order of magnitude more, and the window to do the work is set by boat availability and weather rather than by the condition of the steel. That economics is why so much offshore integrity work is specified around systems that cure cold, tolerate a substrate that is damp or oil contaminated, and can be applied by a small crew inside a single trip.

What drives the decision

Belzona's offshore stack is built for that constraint. Surface-tolerant epoxies bond to manually prepared, wet, or underwater steel where a conventional marine epoxy would disbond inside a season. Composite wrap systems restore structural capacity on corroded and mechanically damaged pipework to ISO 24817 and ASME PCC-2 without welding, so the line stays in production. Heat-activated coatings go straight onto hot insulated pipe at operating temperature, which removes the shutdown from the corrosion under insulation scope entirely.

01Splash-zone protection on legs, risers, caissons and conductors

The splash zone is the highest corrosion-rate band on the structure and the hardest one to prepare. The steel is wet on a tidal cycle, coated in marine growth and residual hydrocarbon, and reachable only from a basket, a rope, or a dive. Any specification that assumes a dry, blast-cleaned SA 2.5 substrate is a specification that will not be executed as written.

The Belzona answer is surface tolerance. Belzona 5831 (ST-Barrier) is the splash-zone and tide-line barrier coating, formulated to displace water from the substrate so it adheres to wet, oil-contaminated, and underwater surfaces. It has a defined application substrate temperature window, confirm it on the PSS against the actual steel temperature on the day rather than against air temperature. Where metal loss has to be rebuilt before the barrier goes on, Belzona 1212 and Belzona 1161 (Super UW-Metal) are the surface-tolerant repair composites for damp, oily, and underwater steel.

Above the wet band, where the substrate can be brought to a reasonable standard, Belzona 5811 (Immersion Grade) carries the long-term corrosion barrier and Belzona 1111 (Super Metal) or Belzona 1311 (Ceramic R-Metal) rebuild measured wall loss back to profile. Belzona 5811 and 1982 hold ABS approvals; we confirm the current certificate number, revision and scope against the specific product code before it goes into a class-witnessed scope.

One limit worth stating plainly: a splash-zone coating is a corrosion barrier, not structural steel. Where ultrasonic thickness mapping shows the member has lost code-allowable wall, the answer is a structural repair or a reinforcement design, not a thicker coat. 02Caisson and riser repair and rebuild

Caissons, conductors and risers fail from the outside in the splash zone and from the inside where produced or seawater flow carries solids. Replacement means heavy lift, dive support, and in most cases a production interruption, so the practical question is whether the remaining wall can be reinforced and protected in place.

Composite reinforcement

Belzona SuperWrap II is the engineered composite wrap system for restoring structural integrity on metallic pipework with external corrosion, mechanical damage, and through-wall defects. It is qualified to ISO 24817 and ASME PCC-2, and the repair is designed rather than estimated: defect dimensions, pipe geometry, design pressure, design temperature and required design life are the inputs, and wrap length and layer count are the outputs. The reinforcement is Belzona 9381, a glass and carbon fiber hybrid sheet pre-qualified with the SuperWrap II resins.

Choosing the resin for Gulf conditions

Belzona 1982 (Long Working Life Resin), minimum application temperature 20 degrees C (68 degrees F) with extended working life at 30 degrees C (86 degrees F) and service to 80 degrees C (176 degrees F). This is usually the right resin for a warm-weather offshore application where the pot life of a standard resin is the limiting factor.

Belzona 1984 (Surface Tolerant Resin), applied to damp, wet and underwater surfaces with minimal preparation, service to 50 degrees C (122 degrees F). This is the splash-zone and subsea caisson resin.

Belzona 1983 (High Temperature Resin), service to 150 degrees C (302 degrees F). This is the resin for hot lines. We do not claim a fire-resistance approval for it; where the operator's fire case governs, send us the requirement and we will get a written position from Belzona technical before anything is specified.

Belzona 1981 (Low Temperature Resin), applicable down to 5 degrees C (41 degrees F) and to be avoided above 20 degrees C (68 degrees F) because of its reactivity. Rarely the Gulf choice, but it exists for cold-weather work.

Metal rebuild before the wrap

Belzona 1111 (Super Metal) rebuilds measured metal loss to profile. Belzona 1121 (Super XL-Metal) is the same repair duty with an extended working life, which matters when the crew is rebuilding a large caisson area in one mix. Belzona 1311 (Ceramic R-Metal) is the erosion-corrosion resistant rebuild grade where the loss is flow-driven, and Belzona 1321 (Ceramic S-Metal) is the immersion-grade ceramic coating over it.

03Deck, walkway and helideck surfacing, including slip resistance

Offshore decks are wet, salt-laden, and walked in boots by crews carrying loads, so slip resistance is a personnel-safety control rather than a finish preference. The surfacing also has to survive UV, standing seawater, and dropped-object impact.

Belzona 4411 (Granogrip) is the three-component anti-slip surfacing with an aluminum oxide aggregate, applied to steel, concrete, quarry tile and wood, available in gray and safety yellow. It is the standard choice for stair treads, ladder platforms, walkways, and equipment access points. Belzona 5231 (SG Laminate) is the slip-resistant epoxy floor coating where the requirement is a seamless chemical-resistant and abrasion-resistant deck rather than a coarse aggregate grip. Belzona 5233 is the waterborne UV-stable floor topcoat, formulated to resist UV chalking and color change in outdoor service, which is the relevant property on an open deck.

A caution on helidecks

Helideck surfacing is governed by a friction specification set by the aviation regulator and the helideck certification body, and by the operator's own aviation standard. Those specifications reference a measured friction value and a marking scheme, and approval attaches to a tested system, not to a coating class. We do not assert that any Belzona product meets a specific helideck friction standard. Bring us the friction and marking requirement your aviation authority applies and we will take it to Belzona technical for a written position before anything is specified. Deck and walkway surfacing outside the helideck landing area is a straightforward Belzona 4411 or 5231 scope.

04Ballast tank and produced water tank linings

Tank internals offshore are a confined-space, hot-work-restricted, schedule-driven scope. The lining decision is driven by three things: the temperature of the contained fluid, its chemistry, and how dry you can realistically get the substrate before the coating window closes.

Ballast tanks and void spaces

New-build and dry-dock ballast tank coating is dominated by performance-standard systems from the major coatings suppliers. Belzona's role offshore is in-service repair: recoating sections of an existing system that have failed locally, rebuilding pitting at structural members and weld toes, and sealing where dry-out is impractical. Belzona 1212 handles the damp or oil-contaminated patch repair, Belzona 5831 (ST-Barrier) covers the wet substrate that disqualifies most standard cures, and Belzona 5811 (Immersion Grade) is the immersion barrier once the surface is reasonably dry. Belzona 5811 is rated for continuous immersion in aqueous solutions up to 50 degrees C (122 degrees F).

Produced water tanks, vessels and separators

Produced water is hotter and dirtier than ballast water, and the selection follows the operating envelope rather than a general epoxy class:

Up to 50 degrees C (122 degrees F) continuous immersion, Belzona 5811 (Immersion Grade).

Up to 95 degrees C (203 degrees F) in aqueous solutions, Belzona 5892, a 100 percent solids high temperature immersion coating applied by brush or heated airless spray.

Up to 130 degrees C (266 degrees F) continuous immersion, Belzona 1391T, hand-applied and ceramic filled.

Where the water is acid contaminated, for example by CO2 or organic acids, Belzona 1392 (Ceramic HT2) is the acid-resistant grade, rated to 120 degrees C (248 degrees F) continuous immersion.

Where ultrasonic mapping shows measurable metal loss inside the vessel, rebuild before the lining goes on: Belzona 1311 (Ceramic R-Metal) at ambient service temperatures, and Belzona 1511 (Super HT-Metal) where the wall runs hot, rated to 160 degrees C (320 degrees F) wet.

Confirm the fluid chemistry with a current sample analysis rather than the original design basis. Produced water composition drifts across the life of a field, and a lining specified against a ten-year-old analysis is a lining specified against the wrong fluid.

05Topsides corrosion under insulation and structural steel

Corrosion under insulation is the failure mode that quietly rewrites offshore turnaround scope, because the damage is invisible until the lagging comes off and the discovery happens when the crew and the boat are already committed. The aggressive band sits roughly between 50 degrees C and 175 degrees C (120 degrees F to 350 degrees F), where condensed and chloride-laden water sits against warm steel under the jacket.

Coating hot steel without a shutdown

The two heat-activated systems are selected by the substrate temperature at the time of application, not by the design temperature of the line:

Belzona 5841 (CUI Protection), a 100 percent solids two-part epoxy brush-applied directly onto hot metal from 30 degrees C to 80 degrees C (86 degrees F to 176 degrees F), with minimal surface preparation.

Belzona 5851 (HA-Barrier), a single-component epoxy that cures in contact with hot surfaces, for substrates from 70 degrees C to 150 degrees C (158 degrees F to 302 degrees F). No weighing, no mixing, which matters on a rope-access or scaffold scope.

Once the steel is protected, Belzona 3211 (Lagseal) re-encapsulates the insulation and cladding with a seamless flexible membrane so wind-driven rain and washdown water stop reaching the jacket seams. Where personnel-protection insulation is the actual requirement, Belzona 5871 is the cool-to-touch anti-corrosion thermal insulation barrier for pipework, ducting and equipment.

Structural steel, handrails and secondary steelwork

Salt spray attacks handrails, grating supports, cable tray, pipe supports and module steel continuously, and these are the assets that never make the priority list until they are a dropped-object risk. Belzona 6111 (Liquid Anode) is the zinc-rich epoxy primer for marine and industrial environments where long-term corrosion resistance is required, overcoated with Belzona 5811 for the barrier. Where appearance and UV durability also matter, Belzona 5115 is the 100 percent solids high-gloss epoxy-polysiloxane hybrid topcoat. Belzona 5111 (Ceramic Cladding) is the urethane option for metallic and masonry surfaces exposed to chemical, abrasive and corrosive attack, suitable for splashing and spillage but not for permanent immersion.

06Live leak sealing and composite wrap on process piping

Offshore, a hot work permit is expensive in time and in risk, and on a producing platform the shutdown needed to weld a repair often costs more than the asset it protects. Cold-applied polymeric repair exists to close that gap: stop the leak, restore the wall, document the repair, and defer the steel replacement to a planned outage.

Stopping the leak

Belzona 9611 (ES-Metal) is the fast-curing epoxy putty stick for emergency sealing of live low-pressure leaks, used to hold the situation while the permanent repair is mobilized. Belzona 1212 is the surface-tolerant composite for live leak sealing and for bonding onto damp, oil-contaminated or underwater pipe surfaces, including dissimilar-metal cases where the leak sits at a galvanic couple. Belzona 9631 is the water-activated pre-impregnated fiberglass wrap for fast emergency pipe repair, and Belzona 9621 is the 3D mesh repair kit for cold-applied live leak repair on straight pipework.

Restoring the wall

Emergency sealing is not an integrity repair. The engineered repair is Belzona SuperWrap II, qualified to ISO 24817 and ASME PCC-2, calculated against the actual defect and the actual operating envelope. Resin selection follows the same logic as on risers: Belzona 1982 for warm-weather working life, Belzona 1984 where the surface is damp or wet, Belzona 1983 for high-temperature lines.

What we need to scope it

Defect type, dimensions and remaining wall thickness, from a current UT or scan.

Line size, schedule, material and coating history.

Design and operating pressure and temperature, and the fluid.

Required design life for the repair, and whether it is an interim or a permanent case.

Substrate condition and the surface preparation actually achievable at the location.

Can Belzona systems be applied offshore while the platform stays in production?

In most of the scopes above, yes. Belzona systems cure at ambient temperature and require no welding or hot work, so the controlling permit is usually confined space or working at height rather than hot work. The heat-activated CUI coatings, Belzona 5841 and Belzona 5851, are applied directly to hot operating pipework, so the line does not come down at all. Live leak sealing and SuperWrap II composite repair are both designed for in-service application. What we will not do is recommend an in-service polymeric repair as a substitute for steel replacement where the member has lost code-allowable wall thickness.

How do you specify a coating for the splash zone when the steel is never dry?

By selecting a system engineered for that substrate rather than assuming the substrate can be brought to specification. Belzona 5831 (ST-Barrier) displaces water from the surface so it bonds to wet, oil-contaminated and underwater steel. Belzona 1212 and Belzona 1161 (Super UW-Metal) are the surface-tolerant repair composites for rebuilding metal loss under the same conditions. Preparation is still required, it is simply a standard the crew can actually reach with hand and power tools from a basket or a rope.

Is SuperWrap II an engineered repair or a wrap you buy by the roll?

It is an engineered repair. SuperWrap II is qualified to ISO 24817 and ASME PCC-2, and the design is calculated from defect dimensions, pipe geometry, design pressure, design temperature and required design life. Those inputs produce the wrap length and layer count. A wrap applied without that calculation is not an ISO 24817 or ASME PCC-2 repair regardless of the materials used, and it will not survive an integrity review.

Which SuperWrap II resin is right for a summer job offshore in the Gulf?

Usually Belzona 1982, the long working life resin, which has a minimum application temperature of 20 degrees C (68 degrees F) and extended working life at 30 degrees C (86 degrees F), with service to 80 degrees C (176 degrees F). If the repair area is damp, wet or below the waterline, Belzona 1984 is the surface-tolerant resin. If the line runs hot, Belzona 1983 is the high-temperature resin. Belzona 1981 is the low-temperature resin and is generally the wrong choice for warm conditions.

Can Belzona 4411 Granogrip be used on a helideck?

We will not answer that from a product sheet. Helideck surfacing has to satisfy a friction specification set by the aviation regulator and the helideck certification body, plus the operator's own aviation standard, and approval attaches to a tested system rather than to a coating class. Do Belzona products carry classification society approvals for offshore work?

Several do, and the approvals attach to specific product codes rather than to Belzona as a brand. Belzona 5811, 5811DW2 and 1982 hold ABS approvals in our product records, and Belzona 1981 and 1984 are associated with ISO 24817 and ASME PCC-2 qualification for SuperWrap II. Before a specification goes to a surveyor, we confirm the current certificate, its revision and its scope against the specific product code and the actual application. We do not offer a blanket approval claim that the surveyor then has to disprove.
