Crane Rail and Runway Support Grouting

Re-bedding a crane runway rail on a fresh full-contact grout bed so it stops rocking and pounding the support steel.

Crane runway rail and soleplate aligned and grouted by a certified Belzona applicator

A job completed with Belzona. This describes what the Belzona system does and how it goes on, not a record of a specific project by this distributor.

The challenge

A crane runway rail had lost full contact under the soleplate where the grout beneath it had broken down. With the support gone, the rail rocked under load and pounded against the bearing steel and the concrete below. That movement spreads the damage, loosens the fasteners, and lets the rail work out of alignment, so the crane rides rough and the runway keeps deteriorating every time the load passes. Left alone, the pounding only widens the gap and puts the whole runway at risk.

The Belzona approach

The rail is lifted and brought back into alignment, then all of the broken-down grout is cleared out so the work runs to sound material. Any bearing steel the pounding has chewed up is rebuilt and the supporting concrete is patched so the new bed has something solid to sit on. Then a fresh, full-contact grout bed is cast under the soleplate so the load is carried evenly along the rail instead of riding on high spots. With the rail aligned and fully supported, it runs without working loose again.

  1. Assess and alignThe rail is checked against the runway, the places where contact has been lost are found, and the rail is lifted back into proper alignment before any grout work begins.
  2. Clear the failed groutAll of the deteriorated grout under the soleplate is broken out and removed so the new bed sits on sound, clean material.
  3. Rebuild bearing steelThe bearing steel the rocking has pounded out is rebuilt so the soleplate has a true surface to seat against.
  4. Patch the concrete and cast the bedThe damaged supporting concrete is patched and a fresh, full-contact grout bed is cast under the soleplate so the load is carried evenly along the rail.
  5. Set and return to serviceThe bed cures, the rail is confirmed aligned and fully supported, and the runway goes back so the crane runs smoothly.

The result

  • Rail re-aligned and seated on a fresh, full-contact grout bed that carries the load evenly
  • Failed grout cleared and the bearing steel and supporting concrete rebuilt to a solid footing
  • Rocking and pounding stopped, so the rail stays put instead of working loose again
  • Runway returned to service by factory-trained and factory-certified Belzona applicators
