The challenge
Cooling-water and process pumps move abrasive, corrosive fluid that slowly eats the casing, volute, and wear rings. As that metal is lost, internal running clearances open up and the hydraulic surface roughens. The pump moves less fluid for the same input, and the plant feels it as lost efficiency and a unit pulled from the rotating spares pool. The usual answer is a new casting, which is costly and often on a long lead time.
The Belzona approach
The pump comes into the shop for an assessment of where the metal has been lost. Blasting takes the casing, volute, and wear ring areas back to clean substrate, and Belzona 1000 Series composites then rebuild the worn metal cold. The internal profile is reformed to the original clearances and an erosion-resistant lining goes over the flow path. The result is a smooth hydraulic surface and tight clearances, ready to go back into service.
- Assess and measureThe casing, volute, and wear rings are inspected to map where erosion and corrosion have opened the internal clearances.
- Surface preparationThe worn areas are grit-blasted back to a clean, profiled substrate so the repair materials bond properly.
- Cold metal rebuildBelzona 1000 Series composites rebuild the lost metal, applied cold so the casing sees no heat distortion.
- Reform and lineThe internal profile is reformed to the original running clearances and an erosion-resistant lining goes across the flow path.
- Return to spares poolThe hydraulic surfaces are finished smooth and the rebuilt pump returns to the plant's rotating spares pool.
